The project has been developed over the years through contact with schools, universities, cooperatives, hospitals, research institutes and other healthcare institutions in many countries, with agreements made to obtain scholarships and accommodation. Progetto Formazione awards the most deserving students, nominated by universities and affiliated healthcare institutions, with a scholarship that fully covers the cost of the internship. One of the binding conditions for participation in the internship for nurses is a basic knowledge of Italian and for doctors, to know English at least. For this reason, preparatory online Italian language courses are organised every year prior to the departure of interns and in some countries several specialised schools and university faculties of medicine and nursing have introduced Italian as an optional subject in their study plans. Curricular internships are shorter, i.e. for one/two months, whereas extracurricular internships last longer, i.e. for nine/twelve months, at the end of which, by taking a final exam, interns can earn learning credits.

The accommodation offered by Programma Formazione includes free flats or shared accommodation (usually 2 or 4 people) in apartment blocks, residences or campuses close to the host institutions, which are easily accessible by public transport (tram or bus), with stops nearby.
