Slide COME BACK PETRA STARA I literally couldn't wait to leave. It was the end of September 2016 and the next day I had to take a coach to Italy, without a return ticket. I was really excited. Just a few months before, I had graduated as a nurse, with the VOS zdravotnicka course at the Emanuel Pötting School in Olomouc, and now I was heading towards new experiences in a city, Milan, that I knew little about, although I had already done a short placement at IEO during my studies in March 2016, before taking my final exam in June of the same year. I already knew the IEO environment and my future colleagues.

The first person to greet me upon my arrival at Lampugnano bus station in Milan was Dr. Bagnoli, who took me to the flat in via Pampuri, where my colleague and room-mate, Dana, was waiting for me. A beautiful location, very close to the IEO, and at the same time well-connected by public transport, which you could easily take to reach the city centre. Tram stop no. 24, which goes to Piazza Duomo, was directly below the apartment. The flat was fully-furnished and the workplace was also within walking distance. There were also parks, green areas, a bicycle path, shops and various supermarkets close to the flat.

I arrived in Milan on a Friday, so after a free weekend and an excursion in this beautiful historical city, it was time for my first day at work. I was really excited. The Italian environment (and not only the working environment) felt very familiar to me and so I settled in quickly. My colleagues were very nice, smiling, friendly and seemed to be full of energy. This is a feeling I never had during the placement I did in my country (probably due to the pleasant climate).

During the internship I was assessed regularly. I was assigned a tutor who shadowed me during my training and who discussed the goals I had achieved and agreed on new goals with me. I have to say that the level of training offered to interns is very high.
There is not enough space in a letter to summarise everything I learned at the IEO during my twelve-month internship. For the first time I saw first-hand how the Primary Nursing system works, which up to then I had only studied in books. I never felt alone and I was able to discuss any doubts I had with my colleagues.

The IEO is a centre of excellence in patient care and scientific research and is also one of the sites of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Milan. My experience there was invaluable, both professionally and personally. If I could go back in time and had to decide whether to repeat this experience, I would absolutely say yes. Without giving it a second thought, because it has been, without question, my best experience till now.
